REPORT ON VACATION
CLASSES AT OGUAAKROM AND NYANKUADZE JHS.
Peace Humanity International and Divine Foundation- Ghana organised vacation
classes for the JHS students of Oguaakrom and Nyankuadze Local Authority from
the 10th August to 30th August 2015.
The objective of the classes was to
support education in the communities in the Gomoa East District. We also wanted
students in the community to use their leisure time profitably during the vacation.
We know that in cities parents pay money
for their children to attend classes during vacation but those in the rural
areas don’t have such opportunities. It is for such reasons that Divine
Foundation Ghana organized the classes for the children.
Volunteers teachers were six in number
and taught four subject; Mathematics, English Language, I.C.T. and Integrated
Science. Daily attendances for the 3 week totaled 561 which was quite
encouraging for a pilot project
Community Participation
The two communities
as a whole played a very important roles in the exercise. They helped in
announcing the vacation classes and helped to find a room close to the school
for the volunteer teachers.
During the vacation classes some
parents in the community encouraged their children to attend the classes and
also visited the school.
Support
The Management of
Lucky Herbal Clinic supported the programmed by donating some amount of money
to help feed the volunteers. Above all, the Manager also paid a personal visit
to the school which served as a great motivation to the volunteers and the
students.
On
the last day we organised a football match between the students and the
community football team and also had refreshment for the students. Parents,
Leaders of the community, P.T.A Executives and the Management of Lucky Herbal
Clinic thanked us for our good work done and they were looking forward to see
us again next year.
Challenges
The classes although was quite successful, it did not go on
without some challenges.
1.
Some children came to school without exercise
books.
2.
We could have bought some learning materials for
the kids but funding was a huge
challenge.
3.
Some children came to school late because they
had to do errands for their parents which ran deep into the school hours.
4.
Some children did not attend at all because they preferred to engage in gallamsey.
Future Plans
It is the desire of our
organization to organise such classes ever year to promote education in the
community. We hope opinion leaders in the community will support us to make
this vision a reality. To conclude, we
wish to thank the management of Lucky Herbal Clinic again for their support
